Supreme Court Strikes Down Domicile Quotas for PG Medical Admissions

New Delhi, January 29, 2025 – In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court of India has ruled that domicile-based reservations for postgraduate (PG) medical courses violate Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law. The ruling puts an end to state and union territory (UT) quotas based on residence for PG medical seats, ensuring that admissions are solely merit-based.

The verdict came in response to four special leave petitions (SLPs) challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s 2019 decision that struck down domicile-based reservation in Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Chandigarh.
