The Supreme Court of India has declared that domicile-based reservations for postgraduate medical courses are unconstitutional, ruling that they violate Article 14 of the Constitution which ensures equality before the law. This landmark decision will not impact previously granted reservations but sets a precedent for future admissions to be strictly merit-based.
The Telangana High Court recently struck down sections of GO (Government Order) 148, revoking provisions that prevented “non-local” candidates from appearing in the NEET-PG Telangana State Counselling. However, the Government of Telangana has now challenged this decision in the Supreme Court, raising concerns among petitioners about further delays in the NEET-PG counselling process.
The Telangana High Court’s decision to revoke GO 148 brings significant relief to NEET-PG 2024 aspirants. With this judgment, students who completed their MBBS in Telangana, even if they did their schooling outside the state, are now eligible for PG counselling in Telangana. This verdict ensures fairness in the admission process and restores opportunities for approximately 400 affected students.
The National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences (NBEMS) has opened the correction window for NEET-PG 2024. All enrolled candidates who wish to edit their details can visit the official website of the board at natboard.edu.in to make the necessary corrections. The correction window will remain open until May 16, so candidates are advised to review and finalize any changes before the deadline.
