NEET-SS Counselling 2025: Round-2 Kept on Hold as MCC and Tamil Nadu Face Off in Supreme Court Over Vacant Seats

New Delhi: The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has officially put Round-2 of the Super Speciality (SS) Counselling 2025 on hold. The delay stems from an ongoing legal dispute between the Government of Tamil Nadu and the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) regarding the allocation of 151 vacant Super Speciality (DM/M.Ch.) seats.

In an urgent notice issued on June 6, 2026, the MCC informed candidates that the counselling process is frozen pending further legal clarity and decisions related to the writ petition Tamilvani & Ors. vs. State of Tamil Nadu & Ors..

NOTICE FOR STATUS OF SS COUNSELLING 2O25 DATED 06-06-2026

The Core of the Dispute: 151 Super Speciality Seats

The standstill traces back to an order passed by the Hon’ble Supreme Court on May 29, 2026. In that ruling, the apex court directed the State of Tamil Nadu to intimate the DGHS regarding 151 Super Speciality seats that had remained unfilled.

Following the court’s instructions, the MCC immediately took action:

  • Initial Outreach: The MCC sent an email to Tamil Nadu authorities requesting that the 151 vacant seats be reverted to the DGHS/MCC so they could be included in the active NEET-SS Counselling process. No response was initially received despite tight counselling timelines.
  • Escalation: The Chairman of the MCC subsequently issued a Demi-Official (D.O.) letter to the Principal Secretary (Health) of Tamil Nadu, pushing for swift compliance with the Supreme Court’s mandate.

Tamil Nadu Files Review Petition

The deadlock intensified on June 5, 2026, when the Government of Tamil Nadu formally responded to the MCC. State authorities revealed that they had filed a Review Petition before the Supreme Court on June 4, 2026, effectively challenging or seeking modification of the directive to surrender the seats.

Because Tamil Nadu is withholding the 151 seats pending their review plea, the entire structure of Round-2 counselling has been disrupted.

What Lies Ahead for NEET-SS Candidates?

The MCC noted that this standoff has significant implications for both the execution and timely completion of the NEET-SS Counselling process.

As it stands, the committee is currently:

  1. Examining the implications of Tamil Nadu’s communication.
  2. Exploring various legal remedies to resolve the gridlock.
  3. Determining the next appropriate course of action based on how the Supreme Court handles the newly filed Review Petition.

Official Advisory: The MCC has strongly advised all concerned Super Speciality candidates to refrain from relying on unauthorized rumors and to regularly visit the official MCC website (www.mcc.nic.in) for verified updates and upcoming notices.
